Can You Play PS2 Games on PS5?
No, the PS5 cannot play original PS2 discs directly. If you insert a PS2 game disc into the console, you will see an unsupported disc message. The PS5 is backward compatible with PS4 games, but that compatibility does not extend to PS2 or PS3 discs.
But you can still play some PS2 games on PS5. Sony offers select PS2 classics through PlayStation Plus Premium and the PlayStation Store. These are digital versions that run using emulation on the PS5.
This guide explains what works, what does not, how to play PS2 games on PS5, and the best alternatives if your favorite PS2 game is unavailable
What Happens When You Insert a PS2 Disc Into PS5?
If you insert a PS2 disc into a PS5, the console shows an unsupported disc error and the game will not start. This happens because the PS5 was not built with native PS2 backward compatibility. PS2 games used older hardware architecture, including the Emotion Engine processor, which works very differently from modern PlayStation systems. Unlike some older PS3 models, the PS5 does not include hardware support for original PS2 discs.
3 Official Ways to Play PS2 Games on PS5
While PS2 discs do not work on PS5, Sony still offers a few official ways to play classic PS2 games. You can use PlayStation Plus Premium, buy select titles from the PlayStation Store, or play PS4 remasters that support PS5 backward compatibility.
PS Plus Premium Classics Catalog
PlayStation Plus Premium gives access to a library of classic PS2 games on PS5. Many titles can be downloaded directly to the console and played offline after installation. PS2 games can be downloaded and played offline, while PS3 games on PS Plus Premium are streaming only and require a stable internet connection.
Buy PS2 Games From the PlayStation Store
Some PS2 classics are sold separately on the PlayStation Store. Once purchased, the games stay linked to your PlayStation account, so you do not need an active PS Plus subscription to keep playing them.
PS4 Remasters of Popular PS2 Games
Many old PS2 games were remastered for PS4 and fully support PS5 through backward compatibility. These versions usually include better graphics, faster loading times, trophies, and improved performance on newer hardware. Games like Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix, and the GTA Trilogy are PS2-era titles available on PS5 as remasters or re-releases.
Complete List of PS2 Games Available on PS5 (2026)
Here are some of the most popular PS2 games officially playable on PS5 through PlayStation Plus Premium, the PlayStation Store, or PS4 remasters.
Most PS2 classics on PS5 can be downloaded and played offline. Titles marked “PS Plus Premium / Store” can also be purchased separately without a subscription, while Premium-only games require an active PS Plus Premium plan.
Popular PS2 Games NOT on PS5 (And What to Do)
Some of the biggest PS2 games are still unavailable on PS5. In most cases, the best alternative is using the PCSX2 emulator on a PC with a compatible PS2 BIOS setup.
GTA San Andreas
The original PS2 version of GTA San Andreas is not available on PS5. Rockstar released GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition instead, but many longtime fans dislike the visual changes and technical issues compared to the classic PS2 release.
If you want the original PS2 experience, PCSX2 is currently the best option.
Def Jam: Fight for NY
Def Jam: Fight for NY is still unavailable on PS5 through PS Plus Premium or the PlayStation Store. Licensing issues are believed to be one of the main reasons the game has never returned on modern PlayStation consoles.
Many retro gaming fans use PCSX2 to play the original version on PC.
Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi Series
Classic PS2 titles like Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 are not included in the PS Plus Classics Catalog. Despite strong fan demand, these games have not received official PS5 ports or backward compatibility support.
For players who still want to revisit the series, using a PS2 emulator with the correct PS2 BIOS file remains the most reliable solution
Is PS Plus Premium Worth It Just for PS2 Games?
That depends on how many classic games you actually plan to play. PlayStation Plus Premium costs around $160 per year and includes access to dozens of PS2 classics through the Classics Catalog.
If you only want 3 to 5 games, buying them individually from the PlayStation Store is usually cheaper long term. But if you regularly play retro games and want access to a larger library without buying each title separately, PS Plus Premium gives better value.
The subscription makes more sense for players who enjoy classic PlayStation games often. For casual users who only want a few favorites, separate purchases are usually the better option.
PS5 vs Xbox Series X
If your favorite PS2 game is not available on PS Plus Premium or the PlayStation Store, the PS5 cannot play it because it does not support original PS2 discs. Xbox Series X offers wider backward compatibility, while many players use a PS2 emulator on PC with a PS2 BIOS file for unsupported games.
Best PS2 Games Available on PS5 Right Now
If you are starting with PS2 classics on PS5, these are some of the best games still worth playing in 2026. Most of them support higher resolutions, faster loading, and trophy support on modern PlayStation consoles.
How to Play ANY PS2 Game on PC
If a PS2 game is unavailable on PS5, the easiest solution is using PCSX2 on PC. It lets you play almost the entire PS2 library with better graphics, higher frame rates, and controller support.
To set it up properly, you also need a compatible PS2 BIOS file before games can run correctly.
What Features Do PS2 Games Get on PS5?
PS2 games on PS5 often include modern improvements that were not available on the original console versions. Depending on the game, you may get:
- Higher resolution support
- Smoother performance
- Faster loading times
- Save states
- Rewind features
- Trophy support
Some PS4 remasters of PS2 games also include improved textures, better frame rates, and DualSense controller support on PS5. Features can vary between titles because not every PS2 classic receives the same upgrades.
Popular PS2 Games NOT Available on PS5
Many classic PS2 games still cannot be played directly on PS5, even with PlayStation Plus Premium. Some titles only have remasters or newer replacements, while others remain completely unavailable on modern PlayStation consoles.
Conclusion
The PS5 cannot play original PS2 discs, but Sony still offers a limited number of PS2 games through PlayStation Plus Premium, the PlayStation Store, and PS4 remasters that support PS5 backward compatibility. Some classic titles work well on modern hardware and include features like higher resolution support, trophies, and faster loading times.
If you were wondering whether you can play PS2 games on PS5, the short answer is yes, but only for a limited selection through official Sony channels. For unsupported games, many players still use PCSX2 on PC to access the full PS2 library with better compatibility and performance.
